IS TWO BETTER THAN ONE?

Nate and I took Agnes to Petco on Saturday because she had a squinty eye that looked suspicious. I think it was pink eye. But don't worry, she's all better because I'm pretty much the best pet owner and I healed her with regular eye drop treatments.

But, that's not really the point of this post. While we were at Petco it was "adoption day" and lots of pets where in cages inside the store. I talked to the Humane Society representative there about Agnes' eye and he pointed to two adorable kittens in a cage that were about the same age as Agnes. Still not the point. He then told me he had lost four kittens that morning to distemper and we both made a pouty sad face. Still not the point.

The point is this. Last night as I was trying to fall asleep, I kept thinking about those two kittens in the cage at Petco. They were Agnes' size and looked so sad to be sitting in a rabbit cage with no one to hug them or love them. And then I wondered if two cats were better than one. Not really any more work required but Agnes could have a buddy and they could play together and cuddle up on cold mornings. But the biggest reason why I thought two were better than one is because I think Agnes is a pretty happy cat and I just felt so bad that those two kittens were going back to the Humane Society to sit in a cage. A CAGE. Not to a home with carpet and a fireplace and two people who love them and feed them regularly and comb them and take them in the car to explore.

Maybe two is better than one. I'm still trying to convince Nate.

And P.S. Is this how cat ladies start out? With good intentions?

I just read this post to JJ and he wanted to tell you that "yes, this is how crazy cat ladies start out." Maybe I could just convince JJ to let me get one and then they could have kitty playdates.

Even though I grew up on a farm, I will say that there is a point of "too many." But that being said, every animal should have a buddy or two to hang with. They are just so much more content that way.

Rule to the wise: get them neutered before puberty sets in or they lose all their kitten fun-ness.

I have 3 kitties and think 'crazy cat lady' starts at 5. I think they are much happier with another cat in the house after an initial adjustment period!

So would you get just one or both of them? My family just adopted a dog. And a couple days ago I saw the Simpson's episode that explained the beginning of the Cat Lady. It might be good research material.

Yes, but three is better than two. And definitely get them fixed before they are 6 months or you will regret it. Was that threatening enough??

Okay, I'm about 75% convinced the second cat will be an okay choice. I think it's cruel how women of a certain age (let's just say over 35 puts you in that category) that don't have children YET get coined cat lady when what them might be is just a nice girl who wants to share her good fortune with a poor orphaned cat. Doesn't anyone watch those damned Sarah McLaughlin ASPCA commercials. I cry EVERY time.

Seriously, Tonia, I have to change the channel the second they come on - or tears are streaming and my day is ruined because all I can think about is donating every cent I have to those damn animals...

Tonia, two is good. Twice as nice. I can't believe what having a cat has done for our entire family. They soften all the "edges". What did we ever do without Guy-Gus-Gus-Kitty-James P. Sullivan-Sully-O'Malley-Scooter-KitKat? Just don't know...

Don't you have to be single to be a "Cat Lady"? I can't think of any married "crazy cat couples".
