DIRTY LITTLE SECRET #1

There are a few good movies I'm proud to say I could watch over and over. Then there are others. Others I'm embarrassed about because the cerebral half of my brain knows they are completely stupid. But the other half could watch them over and over again while sitting on the couch in a lump.

The movies I'm embarrassed to admit I like include but are not limited to:
1. The Mirror Has Two Faces
2. Bed of Roses

FILM FESTIVAL BUSIES

Nate and I have seen seven movies this last week which explains why I haven't posted at all. We actually had tickets for a documentary this afternoon but chose not to go. We just couldn't swing it with work. We saw great movies, nothing disappointing or vulgar which is a rarity. Hooray for Sundance.
We were lucky enough to see Jack White in a documentary called, "It Might Get Loud". I stepped into the isle of the theater and took his photo. That he didn't punch me in the face tells me he liked me right off the bat. We also saw a documentary called, "Good Hair" directed by Chris Rock and wouldn't you know it...he showed up afterward for Q&A. We were spoiled this year.

LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG

John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson made this movie back in 2004. Taking place in New Orleans, it exposes you to great southern music and wonderful literary passages. I highly recommend it. It has inspired me to read more T.S. Eliot and Robert Frost in the next few weeks. What a great movie to watch on a cold Autumn night.

ARE YOU A ROCKNROLLA?

If you have two hours to spare in the next week and fancy yourself a Guy Richie movie fan, get thee to the theater for a little RockNRolla! Good music. Great plot and characters. Smokin' pace. Oh, and Thandie Newton is in it for anyone still doubting. Might be one of the best movies of the year!

THIS MOVIE IS STUCK IN MY HEAD

I've been doing a lot of traveling lately so I dropped many movies on my iPod to make the hours of flying pass by more quickly. I recently watched Into the Wild and now I cannot stop thinking about it. It was like watching someone live the dream I've had since I was about 19 {minus the starving in the magic bus, of course}. I think the part I loved the most was watching him run around on the prairie with horses. Happy. Unbridled. FREE. "Life was more exciting when I was penniless."
If you haven't, you should watch it.

OH THE MISERY

Kathy Bates is the PERFECT scary woman in Misery. I happened onto the movie tonight and it sends me into a panic. I even know what happens and my heart is racing.

"You better start showing me a little more respect - Mister Man!!"


















Stephen King ruffles all my feathers.

WHAT DOES HE WHISPER?

I love, loved this movie. The last scene was the perfect sad ending. I have my own ideas about what he whispers in her ear but I'd love to hear what you think. Was it something like, "hang in there kid", or "I'll never forget how you made me smile".

ANYONE FOR CHOCOLAT?

Nate and I stumbled onto the sheer delight of Chocolat tonight. I own the DVD and haven't watched it in years but it came on TV so we hunkered down in the our chocolate brown velvet couch and enjoyed every minute of it.
It's given me an idea, really. I'm thinking about having a chocolate party. Eat chocolate. Watch chocolate. Drink chocolate. How much fun would that be?
One of my favorite lines in the movie comes from Vienne's {Juliette Benoche} daughter Anouk. "Why can't you wear black shoes like all the other mothers?"

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

Noelle requested a movie review for No Country for Old Men and I'm obliged to deliver.
Nate and I were really tired Saturday night. Especially since we had pulled some serious teamwork and got an awkwardly shaped 300 lb treadmill down the stairs and into our basement {I have serious lower back pain today and may complain about it off and on during the week}. About 9:30 pm we left for the theater and I hoped this movie would be good enough to keep me awake. I'm known for falling asleep during movies; even in the theater sitting in an upright position {read: Sahara and Enchanted}.
At 9:45 the previews started and by 10:00 I was covering my eyes and shrinking in my seat. So tense I was curled up in the fetal position the entire two hours. Nate had to keep pulling my hands from my eyes. This is one of those movies that inspires you to think, make connections, wonder, and think some more. We got home after midnight and ended up spending another hour online reading discussion boards about the movie, particularly the ending. Not only did this movie keep me awake and alert for 2 hours, but it kept me alert and thinking for another few afterwards.






















This guy will become the face in all your scary dreams. Promise.

CONCLUSION
Is it worth seeing? YES
Should you get a babysitter and see it? YES
Should you get a big diet coke? NO, even a five-minute "bio-break" will put you way behind

DEAR AMY ADAMS

Dear Amy,
Though I did not particularly like the movie Enchanted and fell asleep 15 minutes after the movie started, Nate and I both LOVED your contribution to the Sundance Festival this year. Hands-down, Sunshine Cleaning has been the best movie we've seen so far. If The Last Word is a better movie, I'll never know because Mother Nature blew a major snow storm my way and Amie and I didn't dare drive to Park City.
In closing, you have two HUGE fans in Nate and I. And I think Nate might have a secret crush on you so please keep your distance. I'm sure you'd fall for him if you met him.

BAD BABY PIE

Nate and I watched Waitress last night and loved it. Just the right mix of clever writing, sarcasm, and sweetness. The vibrant colors and succulent pies were a total treat. My favorite line? I have two.
1. "dear damn baby".
2. It's an alien and a parasite.
It's always interesting when I watch a movie that glamorizes an otherwise blah job (like waitress) and I find myself thinking...it would be so much fun to be a waitress who bakes pies for a small town diner.

DO YOU SUNDANCE?

I have been attending films at the Sundance Festival for years. I posted a lot about it last year here and here. In fact, some of my first dates with Nate included going to see films during the 2005 festival. I first realized that I loved him after dinner at the Foundry Grill and "Happy Endings" on the big screen.
One of the clues that 2008 was truly destined for greatness was when I received an email from the festival with my time slot to buy tickets. For the first time ever I went shopping for tickets the first day they went on sale. For those of you who aren't familiar with the festival, it's a lottery system and I've always been assigned the last day when nearly everything is sold out.
This year I drew up a best case scenario and subsequent scenarios because, as I've learned in the past, you always have to go with a back up plan. But, as 2008 is shaping up to be a fabulous year; I got every movie I flagged as first-choice.

CLEAN ENOUGH FOR YOUR MOM; SWEET ENOUGH TO BE REMEMBERED

Nate and I saw Lars and the Real Girl last night and we both really liked it. It was completely entertaining and genuinely funny. It's one of those rare movies that causes you to think about life a little deeper. I recommend you see it if you get the chance.

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL

Can't wait for Lars and the Real Girl to come out this weekend. Totally feels Sundance Festival Indie but released in mainstream theaters. You can bet Nate and I will be sitting in some theater somewhere this weekend, drinking our smuggled drinks and eating our smuggled snacks, in cinematic heaven.

ANOTHER REASON TO LOVE DREW

I've said it again and again. Drew and I would be fast friends; of this I have no doubt. But now, there is even more meat to my claim. I applaud Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore for their plans to bring Grey Gardens to the masses.

THANKS TO SUNDANCE

Thanks to Sundance Resort I've: seen some really cool independent movies {Little Miss Sunshine, Layer Cake, Matador, Once, Rocket Science, Napoleon Dynamite, Garden State, to name a few}, eaten the BEST steak of my life {bison steak at the Tree Room, if you please}, learned to snowboard {the instructor told me I had impeccable balance}, had fresh powder for snowshoeing, seen Robert "Bob" Redford {in person and within a few feet}, enjoyed the best fish tacos out on the patio at The Foundry Grill, supped a decadent brunch with girlfriends, and got engaged in a peaceful and romantic setting. Lucky for me, Nate loves it there, too. He was a part time ski instructor at Sundance when we met and had the hottest tan face!
If you live in Utah and have never visited the Sundance Resort, make haste. If you don't have the opportunity to visit, I pity you.

TREASURES IN VICTORIA BC

While in Victoria I decided to find something unique for our house. Nate and I found these prints done on canvas. If they look familiar, watch the video clip and you'll recognize them in their few moments of fame.
The artist is Michael Sowa. I've found a few other prints I'd love to add in our house including the pig diving into the lake. It's so silly and takes your mind on a journey wondering just why the pig is so anxious to get into the water.
